Let me state this for the record. If you are going to have a meatball sandwich, then it should be on garlic bread. Where I live, it’s tough to find quality fresh bread. I’ve resorted to the frozen French baguette for sandwiches like cheesesteaks or submarine sandwiches, but for a meatball sub, it just doesn’t work. You need a sub roll that is wider to stuff the meatballs in properly. Most supermarkets sell those but they tend to be slightly less fresh. I have found the trick is to turn that sub into garlic bread by toasting it with butter and garlic powder. We reheated homemade meatballs for this meal check out our recipe on how to make meatballs from scratch.
The best idea for great garlic bread
Make cheesy garlic bread with meatballs. Don’t knock it until you try it.
Whats the best thing to put on a meatball sandwich?
Make garlic bread and top with mozzarella cheese and meatballs.
What cheese goes on a meatball sub?
Turn the bread into garlic bread and melt mozzarella cheese on top and then sprinkle parmesan cheese over the meatballs. If you decide to use provolone cheese be sure it’s good sweeter cheese and not a sharp sour provolone cheese that tastes like swiss cheese.

Notes
We didn’t include the amount of garlic powder and Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle lightly if you like more garlic flavor sprinkle generously or if you like a cheesy flavor sprinkle more generously. For example we don’t like toasted bread so we are careful with how long the bread heats in the oven.
